In 2004, the World Health Organization International Obesity Task Force (IOTF), the advocacy arm of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, reported from the annual conference on the exploding rate of obesity globally.

The tenth annual meeting just concluded in Sidney, Australia, and not surprisingly, things have only gotten worse. The WHO says more than a billion people — nearly 1 in 6 of the world’s population — are overweight, outnumbering the 800 million who are undernourished.

Obesity is a Global Epidemic! The task force reports that childhood obesity (age five to 11) has doubled in English and Polish kids, and 20 percent of these kids aged 13 to 17 are obese. Within the European Union, 5 million children are obese and 25,000 have type two diabetes.

The IOTF estimates one in five children in Europe is now overweight. An additional 400,000 children each year are becoming overweight, adding to the 14 million-plus who are already overweight, including at least 3 million obese.

Although we know the reasons why people are growing fatter faster, the reasons are complicated. Among other reasons, overeating is often a substitute for other addictive behaviors; some health experts think that the increase in obesity mirrors the decrease in tobacco use.

The concerns and recommendations of the latest International Task Force on Obesity have not changed over the previous years.

If you’re like most people world-wide, you’re not exercising daily, even once weekly, and you’re eating more fast food and calories, adding pounds to your weight and taking years away from your life.

by Bunny Vreeland

As we enter into this New Year we all tend to have a heightened sense of the opportunities and possibilities that 2008 can bring. The need for goal-setting becomes more obvious and clear. And the great thing about goal-setting is you can keep it as simple or get as elaborate as you would like. Below are some abbreviated points on goal-setting for the New Year.

I’ve often said, the major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get. That is why goals are so powerful. They are part of the fabric that makes up our lives. And goal-setting is where we create our goals.

Goal-setting can be so powerful. It provides focus. It shapes our dreams. It gives us the ability to hone in on the exact actions we need to take in order to get everything in life that we desire.

Goals are exciting because they provide focus and aim for our lives. Goals are great because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that we never have before. In order to reach our goals we must become better. We must change and grow.

There are three components to a powerful goal: It must be inspiring. It must be believable. It must be one that you can act on. When your goals inspire you, when you believe them, and when you act on them is when you will get them!

Goals also provide long-term vision in our lives. We all need lots of powerful, long-range goals to help us get past short-term obstacles. Life is designed in such a way that we look long-term and live short-term.

We dream for the future and live in the present. Unfortunately, the present can produce many hard obstacles. Fortunately, the more powerful our goals (because they are inspiring and believable) the more we will be able to act on them in the short-term and guarantee that they will actually come to pass!

So, let’s take a closer look at the topic of Goal-Setting and see how we can make it forceful as well as practical. What are the key aspects to learn and remember when studying and writing our goals?

I believe there are four main areas of emphasis:

1. Evaluation and Reflection. The only way we can reasonably decide what we want in the future and how we will get there, is to first know where we are right now and secondly, what our level of satisfaction is for where we are in life. As we focus this month on goal-setting, the first order of business and our topic this week is for each of us to be serious about taking some time for evaluation and reflection.

2. Dreams and Goals. What are your dreams and goals? Not related to the past or what you think you can get, but what you want. Have you ever really sat down and thought through your life values and decided what you really want? This isn’t something that someone else says you should have or what culture tells us successful people do or have. These are the dreams and goals that are born out of your own heart and mind. These are the goals that are unique to you and come from who you were created to be and gifted to become. Next week we will show you exactly how to find out what you want from life.

3. S.M.A.R.T. Goals.
S.M.A.R.T. means Specific, Measurable, Attainable,
Realistic, and Time-sensitive.

Specific:
Don’t be vague. Exactly what do you want?

Measurable:
Quantify your goal. How will you know if you’ve achieved it or not?

Attainable:
Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish at
this point in your life – along with taking into consideration your current
responsibilities.

Realistic:
It’s got to be do-able, real and practical.

Time:
Associate a time frame with each goal. When should you complete the goal?

We will spend some time in two weeks looking at how to apply the S.M.A.R.T. test to your goals to make sure they are as powerful as
they can be!

4. Accountability. Think of the word “accountable.” It means to “give an account.” When someone knows what your goals are, they help hold you accountable. Whether it is someone else going through this program with you (have you thought about inviting a friend to join you on this one-year journey?) or just someone you can give the basic idea to; having a person who can hold you accountable will give you another added boost to getting your goals! On Week Eight we will show you how to set up an accountability partner.

So: Evaluate/Reflect; Decide What You Want; Be S.M.A.R.T.; Have Accountability.

When you put these 4 key pieces together, you are putting yourself in a position of power that will catapult you toward achieving your goals and the kind of life you desire.

5 Holiday Tips For Avoiding Seasonal Weight Gain

by Bunny Vreeland

My clients often ask, “Bunny, how can I avoid gaining weight during the holidays”? Their concern is legitimate. According to one estimate, the average American adult gains seven pounds of fat between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day!

However, with a little know-how and effort you don’t have to be “average.” In fact, I know many people who lost weight over the holidays — and they feel great while doing it!

One client who followed my advice wrote: “Bunny, I can’t tell you how good it feels to have lost three pounds during the holidays instead of gaining 10 pounds as I used to do. My friends are jealous. It’s January 2nd and I’m feeling (and looking) lean and mean. And, best of all, I actually enjoyed the holidays more because I always felt energetic. In years past, inactivity and lots of food made me constantly sluggish and tired.”

- Bunny Vreeland

Why wait until January to resolve to lose weight? Start now with these 5 Holiday Tips that can help you celebrate the new year without any new pounds — and maybe even a few less!

1. Do some type of exercise every day… preferably every morning. Now this can be as simple as a 15-minute walk some days but it’s VERY important that you do something everyday. Physiologically, this keeps your metabolism elevated, helps to control your appetite, and ENERGIZES you!
Daily exercise increases your mental acuity for hours after you workout — and it helps keep you in a “healthy” frame of mind. Many people tell me that daily exercise gets them to make better food choices because it makes them feel like they are doing something healthy for themselves. Commit to doing at least 15 minutes — but preferably 30 to 60 minutes — everyday during the holidays. Take walks with friends and family. Invite them to your gym to workout and visit with you. Go for a bike ride. Be active. Have fun!

2. Have lots of healthy foods available at your home during the holidays. Make a big fruit salad to keep in the fridge when you need a snack. Have some of your favorite veggies ready to eat for when you’re hungry. Much like a Boy Scout, be prepared!

3. Listen to Bunny Vreeland CDs. Listening to ‘ Bunny Vreeland’s Lose Weight and Keep it Off’ CDs every day or night will help you THINK about the way you eat. It will help keep your weight under control.

4. Strictly limit or avoid alcohol. Alcohol is really bad news! I call it the “triple whammy” because it depresses your metabolism, stimulates your appetite, and it’s loaded with calories. Alcohol has as many calories per gram as fat! I’ve seen some people lose weight just by getting rid of the alcohol.

5. Eat breakfast! When you don’t eat breakfast, you go from dinner the night before until lunch the next day without food! That’s about 18 hours with no food. Your body interprets such a long stretch without food as starvation — and it slows down your metabolism as a safety mechanism. When you repeat this over and over, day after day, year after year, your basal metabolic rate just gets slower and slower and slower.

Now get energized with some daily exercise and moderate food consumption. You’ll REALLY enjoy the holidays. And come January 2 you won’t step on the scale and walk away with regrets!

What causes IBS?

by Bunny Vreeland

[ Bunny Vreeland ] Researchers have yet to discover any specific cause for IBS. One theory is that people who suffer from IBS have a colon (large bowel) that is particularly sensitive and reactive to certain foods and stress.

The immune system, which fights infection, may also be involved. research indicates that:

1. Normal motility, or movement, may not be present in a colon of a person who has IBS. It can be spasmodic or can even stop working temporarily. Spasms are sudden strong muscle contractions that come and go. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

2. The lining of the colon called the epithelium, which is affected by the immune and nervous systems, regulates the flow of fluids in and out of the colon. In IBS, the epithelium appears to work properly. However, when the contents inside the colon move too quickly, the colon looses its ability to absorb fluids. The result is too much fluid in the stool. In other people, the movement inside the colon is too slow, which causes extra fluid to be absorbed. As a result, a person develops constipation. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

3. A person’s colon may respond strongly to stimuli such as certain foods or stress that would not bother most people. Serotonin and the GI Tract Recent research has reported that serotonin is linked with normal gastrointestinal (GI) functioning. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, or chemical, that delivers messages from one part of your body to another. Ninety-five percent of the serotonin in your body is located in the GI tract, and the other 5 percent is found in the brain. Cells that line the inside of the bowel work as transporters and carry the serotonin out of the GI tract. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

People with IBS, however, have diminished receptor activity, causing abnormal levels of serotonin to exist in the GI tract. As a result, people with IBS experience problems with bowel movement, motility, and sensation, having more sensitive pain receptors in their GI tract. In addition, people with IBS frequently suffer from depression and anxiety, which can worsen symptoms. Similarly, the symptoms associated with IBS can cause a person to feel depressed and anxious. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

Researchers have reported that IBS may be caused by a bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Studies show that people who have had gastroenteritis sometimes develop IBS, otherwise called post-infectious IBS. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

The following have been associated with a worsening of IBS symptoms:
• large meals
• bloating from gas in the colon
• medicines
• wheat, rye, barley, chocolate, milk products, or alcohol
• drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or colas
• stress, conflict, or emotional upsets. Researchers have found that women with IBS may have more symptoms during their menstrual periods, suggesting that reproductive hormones can worsen IBS problems.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] How is IBS diagnosed?

IBS is generally diagnosed on the basis of a complete medical history that includes a careful description of symptoms and a physical examination. There is no specific test for IBS, although diagnostic tests may be performed to rule out other diseases. These tests may include stool sample testing, blood tests, and x rays. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

Bunny Vreeland – Camarillo Hypnotherapist

Typically, a doctor will perform a sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy, which allows the doctor to look inside the colon. This is done by inserting a small, flexible tube with a camera on the end of it through the anus. The camera then transfers the images of your colon onto a large screen for the doctor to see better. If the tests results are negative, the doctor may diagnose IBS based on symptoms, including how often a patient may have had abdominal pain or discomfort during the past year, when the pain starts and stops in relation to bowel function, and how bowel frequency and stool consistency have changed. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

Many doctors refer to a list of specific symptoms that must be present to make a diagnosis of IBS. Symptoms include:

• Abdominal pain or discomfort for at least 12 weeks out of the previous 12 months. These 12 weeks do not have to be consecutive.
• The abdominal pain or discomfort has two of the following three features:
• It is relieved by having a bowel movement. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

• When it starts, there is a change in how often you have a bowel movement. When it starts, there is a change in the form of the stool or the way it looks. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

Certain symptoms must also be present, such as:
• A change in frequency of bowel movements
• A change in appearance of bowel movements
• Feelings of uncontrollable urgency to have a bowel movement
• Difficulty or inability to pass stool
• Mucus in the stool
• Bloating
• Bleeding, fever, weight loss, and persistent severe pain are not symptoms of IBS and may indicate other problems such as inflammation, or rarely, cancer.

What is the treatment for IBS?

Unfortunately, many people suffer from IBS for a long time before seeking medical treatment. Up to 70 percent of people suffering from IBS are not receiving medical care for their symptoms. No cure has been found for IBS, but many options are available to treat the symptoms. A doctor will give share the best treatments available for particular symptoms and encourage ways to manage stress and make changes to diet. Medications are an important part of relieving symptoms. Hypnotherapy is non intrusive, safe, comfortable and a cost effective and complementary to use along side mainstream medicine. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

September 25, 2007 – i live in la area and as much as i would love to see you i need some one closer to la or pasadena do you recommend any one. i have phobias such as flying and i have to fly. i get anxiety attacks.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] Byron, Thanks you for your inquiry.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] Yes, Fear of Flying can be very traumatic and I have worked with many clients to help them get past it. Where are you flying? Some of my previous clients are flying to the Orient and Europe with total ease and comfort, now. One of my former clients told me flying is now like, ‘sitting in my own living room.’ I loved that! I have met many qualified Hypnotherapists at the professional conferences we attend and could recommend a few of them. I would like more information from you, however. Do you prefer a man or women Hypnotherapist? Is there a particular area of L.A. that you prefer? Perhaps you could email (Bunny@BunnyVreeland) me with these answers and I can respond with the choice I think would make you happiest. Let me also take this opportunity to tell you about a service that is really growing in popularity. Because of our busy lifestyles, many clients are opting for Hypnotherapy by phone. Think of it this way; you are in my chair with your eyes closed with a headset on, listening to my voice. Or, you are at home, in the comfort of your own bed or chair, with your eyes closed with a phone headset on, listening to my voice. It is easy, convenient and makes sense to more and more busy people. Something for you to think about.

July 06, 2007 – Recently read in the newspaper I read a suggestion that someone who has no libido should consider a hypnotherapist for help. What do you think about that? What kind of treatment would be involved? It wouldn’t get too graphic or embarrassing would it?

[ Bunny Vreeland ] I recently had dinner with a client who came to me a while ago for the same problem. She was dating a man she loved but couldn’t get her libido to ‘participate’. We had 4 sessions and she was a changed woman. I didn’t see her for a few months. Then, I got a phone call from her. She said (and I will always remember this), “Bunny, I am getting married! If it weren’t for you, this wouldn’t be happening so I want to invite you to the wedding.” Of course, I went to the wedding.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] We have kept in touch and we just had dinner, 14 months after the wedding. She is blissfully happy. Isn’t that a great story? It was a long way of answering your question.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] Yes, Hypnotherapy is very useful for libido enhancement. IF it isn’t a physical problem. There are a few questions I would want to ask a client who came for libido challenges, such as; how long has this been going on? How old are you? Are you married? How long? Children? Have you been checked by a doctor to eliminate any physical dysfunction.

[ Bunny Vreeland ] You might want to know that I am certified to work with sexual dysfunctions and challenges and I actually studied with Masters and Johnson in the 80′s in addition to many more, recent studies. As far as the graphic or embarrassing part of your question, it would entail a lot of imagining on your part. I prompt and you ‘fill in the blanks’. It is all in your head. After all, the most important sex organ is between our ears. [ Bunny Vreeland ]

Thanks for the question. I hope I answered it to your satisfaction. Feel free to call me for more information. 805-984-1237. Dr. Bunny [ Bunny Vreeland ]

I’m 37 years old and have very limited memories of my childhood – through early adulthood. I started noticing that I couldn’t remember anything from my childhood in my early 20′s. I’ve racked my brain trying to see what may have caused this.

In December, my dad passed away. He and I were very close growing up, but I made some choices that he didn’t agree with and he “disowned me” for lack of a better term. I am now wondering if this was the event that I’d been looking for – as he stopped speaking to me when I was 22.

I would really like to regain my childhood and young adult memories. Would hypnotherapy help? If so – how does it work and what could I expect?

[ Bunny Vreeland ]

Hello, Tina, Thank you for your question. I know it must be hard for you, not knowing your past. I say I know, because I couldn’t recall a lot of my past, either. Yes, Hypnotherapy can help you ‘retrieve’ this information. It is done through a process called ‘regression’ where you are ‘taken back’ to your childhood. I do it in a very slow and gentle process. Before I do that, I have to ask, ‘Is there anything that you might find that you woud rather leave to the past?”. In other words, how would you feel if you discovered a can of worms, so to speak? I regressed a woman a few years ago who discovered that her father had molested her. Although he had since died, her mother was still alive and living a few miles from my client. Was it best to confront the mother about the abuse since she was in the home when it happened? Or, leave it alone? Sometimes repressed memories are repressed for a reason. I would like to discuss this with you. Feel free to call me at 805-984-1237. Whatever you decide, I wish you well and thank you for the inquiry. Best, Bunn Vreeland

yet 99% of amateur golfers have never even heard about?

It’s self-hypnosis!

Surprised?

The game of golf is mental and at least 80% of a golfer’

s score depends on how well he or she thinks.

Hypnosis helps a golfer to relax, focus inward, and visualize success.

In short, it helps a golfer to think like a champion.

As Jack Nicklaus once said… “Golf is a game of inches and the most important are the 7 between your ears.”

We all know that Golf is a game that begins and ends in the mind. When your internal game is right, you’re going to have a good day on the course. Well, here’s to more good games, lower scores and boosted confidence on the green.

We’ve all heard of the psychological edge players like Nicklaus and Palmer had and especially Tiger Woods has over their opponents and the game itself.

” Was I nervous? Ya! But I just relaxed and hit it.”

Tiger Woods

“Golf is not a mechanical game. To perform your best, you need feel and imagination”.
